Meet a Pirate: Danny Orona

Posted by Tony Lee - Sept. 20

Danny Orona is a 5 foot 6 inch, 160 pound driver from Los Amigos High School who starts on the men's water polo team. “Last year, he really didn't get much playing time but he kept working in practice every single day,” head coach Monty McCord said. "He makes things happen when he's in there. He's a great defensive player (and) he's willing to do a lot of the dirty work not everyone is willing to do." See how he answered the questions.

This is a must see. I promise you will not stop laughing.

This is a video by Orange Coast College's track and field athlete Tri-Vien Nguyen.

However, my HTML coding skills for some reason sucks today so I can't embed it onto this blog. If anyone can do this for me, that would be fantastic.

Here's the link: http://www.facebook.com/video/video.php?v=1122458535480

You'll need a Facebook account to see it (I believe).

Q & A with OCC track star Audrey Crouse

By Tony Lee On Friday, April 10, 2009 0 comments
Audrey Crouse
[In event 41, the women's poll vault, Crouse finished tied-first with OCC's own Lisa Dolan (10-06 feet).]

What do you like the most about track and field?
I like that it's both a team and an individual sport - it's just you versus the clock or you against your mark so there's no room for error but at the same time, you work as a team in practice because you push each other in practice.

What event did you do the best in and the worst in?
I actually did only one because I'm getting ready for next week (for the prelims). I met my personal record for the pole vault.

What's your goals for the prelims next week?
I hope to make it both in the poll vault and the 400-meter hurdles.

Do you have any superstitions or pregame rituals?
Yeah...actually I try to stay away from those because it gets in your head but I eat the same thing before each race.

And what are they?
Two pieces of wheat toast with jelly and two eggs. I definitely try to stay away from (superstitions) though.

What's your favorite type of music?
Depends on the mood; I could go for some Jack Johnson if I'm feeling mellow, some pump up music - rap - before the race...pretty much it.

What's your favorite subject in school?
Right now it's English 101. Before it was math because it wasn't my strong suit and I liked the challenge but now I think I found a nitch for creative writing.

And after track and field, what do you want to be?
I want to be a rep for Volcom or Burton.

Q & A with OCC track star Donovan Toban

By Tony Lee On Friday, April 10, 2009 0 comments
Donovan Toban
[In event 12 , the men's 100 meter dash, Toban finished fifth (11.34) and in event 36, the men's long jump, he finished second with 22-11 feet.]

What's your favorite thing about track and field?
Just being out here and having fun and competing. I’ve been running track all my life.

Which event did you think you competed the best in and the worst?
My worst is probably my long jump and my best is the triple jump.

What are your expectations going into the Orange Empire Conference prelims?
I’m just trying to do my best and get to state.

Do you have any superstitions?
I jerk...the dance.

I thought you meant jerk as in...
Naw man. The dance.

What's your favorite type of music and your favorite artist?
Rap and Hip Hop and Lil’ Wayne.

What's your favorite subject at school?
Math.

After track and field, what would you want to be?
I’m a kinesiology major. I want to do sports medicine.

Thank you everyone!!!

By Tony Lee On Thursday, April 09, 2009 0 comments
I just wanted to say thank you to all the viewers of the OCC Sports blog - especially the returning viewers. You guys make me want to make the blog better and work even harder to report all the OCC sports.

Since the OCC Spots blog is not even a month old, not many OCC students and faculty even know about it.

But through word of mouth by the coaches and athletes and my shameless-self advertisement I created on my sports page this week, the blog has finally hit 100-plus page loads, 300-plus viewers and almost 80 new viewers. [Click here to see the latest Coast Report issue]

I just want to say thank you to everyone and I do mean that from the bottom of my heart.

Also, I encourage people to leave comments, vote on the poll, follow the blog's Twitter account and read the Coast Report. [Click here to go to OCC Sport blog's Twitter account]

Right now I'm just assuming this is what the viewers would want to read about. The more interactive this blog gets, the higher the chance I write about things you guys want to read about.

Because I learned that when you assume you make an @$$ out of u and me. Once again, help me, help you Orange Coast. [Click here to read my column "It's Me, Tony Lee" about asking for help]

I hope everyone will check back tomorrow to see the live coverage of the Coast Classic starting at 1 p.m.

Go Pirates and, once again, thank you to everyone.

PirateTXT: Softball player Kursten Evanski

[Photo courtesy of Orange Coast College]

Orange Coast College's softball player Kursten Evanski (No. 11 in the second row) told me that she's proud of the team's performance yesterday against Riverside Community College.

A little background on the lady Pirates: the team have been battling injuries all season and the team only has two pitchers Sarah Munson (No. 5 in the first row) and Maddie Page (No. 17 in the second row).

The girls practice and play hard everyday trying to get better - even if they are not going to make the playoffs and the season is coming to an end.

The lady Pirates are still looking for its first Orange Empire Conference win but trust me, it's not due to a lack of effort or talent.

Here's what Evanski told me about the game.

Me: hey I just saw ur facebook status...does that mean u guys won ur first conference game?
Kursten: no we lost 7 to 8 but it was amazing. everyone had heart the whole game they all really wanted it. sarah pitched her soul out yesterday, candice (No. 19 in the first row) hit a three run
Kursten: home run which brought in me who hit a shot out to left center and kiele (right of Evanski in the second row) who hit a hard ground single. then sarah got hit in the inner tigh. and it was so nice to
Kursten: here the opposing team get chewed out because of how well we played. it really turned some heads. but if i could replay that entire game again
Kursten: i would. im so proud of these girls for all of those 7 am practices and it finally showed what we are capable of.
Kursten: I could honestly and would brag about that game all day. people would get annoyed but i don't care :-)
Kursten: and it wasn't just one person who contributed. it was EVERYONE!!!!!!!

The lady Pirates' next game is at home against Saddleback College on April 13 at 3 p.m. Everyone come support the ladies and cheer them on to hopefully its first OEC win.

Breaking the curse (update 5)

Drumroll please. Yours truly and the shoes are back on a three-game winning streak.

I'm glad my shoes got all three wins today because this win might put the men's golf team in the playoffs.

It's good to know that my shoes inspire greatness. [Click here to read my sports column "It's Me, Tony Lee" to read about why I started wearing the shoes.]

Tony Lee is now 11-17 and the shoes are 6-1.

The shoes and I will be at the OCC track and field team's next meet the Coast Classic on Friday starting at 1 p.m.

Check back to see the live coverage of this meet on Friday.
