Danny Orona is a 5 foot 6 inch, 160 pound driver from Los Amigos High School who starts on the men's water polo team. “Last year, he really didn't get much playing time but he kept working in practice every single day,” head coach Monty McCord said. "He makes things happen when he's in there. He's a great defensive player (and) he's willing to do a lot of the dirty work not everyone is willing to do." See how he answered the questions.

I didn't win...

By Tony Lee On Saturday, March 28, 2009 0 comments
I didn't win my sports writing competition at the JACC. Sad face.

I'm not a 100 percent sure if this should count to my win-loss total because it didn't involve OCC athletics.

But I was still competing for OCC.

What do you guys think? Should my record stay the same or not?

Breaking the curse (update 3)

From left to right: My Ice Creams, my magical shoes, my Crocs sandals, my dress shoes for formal dinner on Saturday

Good news: my record improved. Bad news: my shoes were at home when I covered the baseball game live on Tuesday.

Sad face.

My overall record is 8-15 but my shoes are still 3-0. I can't wait for seven more wins to get back to a .500 record. (Click here to read the genesis of my magical shoes)

The next event for my shoes and I will be the sports writing contest today at 3:30 p.m. at the Journalism Association of Community Colleges (JACC) conference/convention in Sacramento.

Wish me luck.

According to Coast Report's staff writer Alletta Cooper, the Orange Coast College baseball team credits "Mustache Madness" to its ten-game winning streak.

The Pirates (19-7, 10-2) beat the Riverside Community College Tigers (13-14, 4-8) 5-4 Thursday to keep its winning streak alive.

Go to http://riverside.trivalley.com/baseball/men/ to read more about Thursday's game.

God knows I can't grow a mustache. Maybe everyone else that can should grow one too to keep Coast's winning streak alive.

Player of the Game: Ryan Sheeks plus pictures

By Tony Lee On Friday, March 27, 2009 0 comments
Ryan Sheeks

Before the game, Tony Altobelli picked you as the player to look out for today and you came through with the game-tying and winning run. Any comments on that?
It's exciting to hear that somebody's looking forward to seeing me succeed.

What was different about today?
It's just like any other day. I did feel a lot more relaxed at the plate, trying to be more patient.

Talk about the suicide squeeze in the eight inning.
One of the coaches threw me a verbal, the third baseman was playing back, so I took advantage of the opportunity.

You guys are on a nine-game winning streak. Comments?
We're hot right now. Long as we keep it up, it'd be good.
Our bats are really alive, the pitchers are throwing well and playing really good defense.

After the game

Your Orange Coast College Pirates are winners once again with a score of 8-3.

Win: Kyle Krogman (1-2)
Loss: Robby Ross (5-2)
Save: Brett Williams (2)

More updates will follow after I take some pictures and interview players and coaches.

Scoring update 4

By Tony Lee On Tuesday, March 24, 2009 0 comments
Your Orange Coast College Pirates have taken the lead in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Coast's Corey Schultz hit a bloop single to left field that went in-and-out of Saddleback's Kevin Mota. Next batter D.J. Arellano hit another single to set the stage for
Tony Altobelli's pregame pick make an impact for the Pirates.

Ryan Sheeks came through for the Pirates scoring both the game-tying run and the go-ahead run
on a bases-clearing triple.

The Pirates have a 4-3 lead.

Coast increased its lead to 8-3 in the next inning. Drew Hilman, Scott Hong, pitcher Brett Williams (who is in position to earn his second save of the season) and Ryan Dunn scored in the inning.

Go Pirates.

Alexis (6-years-old), Keri and Alyssa Altobelli (4-years-old)

Do you come to every game to support the boys?
Keri: I come to every home game, I go to most away games and I go to most practices.

Do you ever do any Little League, team mom stuff like bringing the players orange slices, juices boxes or whatnot?
Keri: No nothing like that. Some of the boys work out with my son JJ but other than that, we don't hand out snacks.

How many kids do you and John Altobelli (head OCC baseball coach) have and what are their names and ages?
Keri: We have JJ, he's 18, and this is Alexis, she's going to be six.
Alexis: Hi.
Keri: And this is Alyssa, she's going to four.

Alyssa: Hi.

Any athletes in the making?
Keri: Alexis wants to play hockey but we'll see about that.
Alyssa: And I want to play soccer and basketball.
Keri: OK, we'll see about that.
Alexis: I want to play soccer and baskeball.
Keri: You just want to do everything don't you Lexy? We'll see about that.

If you could say one thing to the Pirates, what would it be?
Keri: Let's get a win boys. Everything seems to be coming together though. Whether they're doing it for Jourdan or they're doing it for themselves. A lot of these boys have been together for two years now. It's been a tough road and we'd really love a championship.

Scoring update 3

In the top of the seventh inning, the Pirates made a pitching change.

Coast's Brett Wallach moved to play first base, taking Kevin Clark out of the game, and pitcher Kyle Krogman came into the game with runners on first and second and one out.

Krogman got out of the inning keeping the score at 2-3.

Let's go Coast. Let's start a rally to keep the winning streak alive.

Scoring update 2

By Tony Lee On Tuesday, March 24, 2009 0 comments
Saddleback College scored three runs in the top of the sixth inning with two outs against Coast's Brett Wallach.

Wallach walked Saddleback's Jeff Montegro, hit both Sean Parvin and Trevor Whyte to load up the bases and then Dalton Sype hit a two-run RBI single to make the score 2-0. The next batter Darren Coombs also hit a single to make it 3-0.

Leading off the bottom of the sixth inning, Pirates' D.J. Arelleno grounded out to shortstop and Ryan Sheeks popped out to left field.

Hoping to start a two-out rally like Saddleback, head Pirate baseball coach John Altobelli gave the green light to Mykal Stokes on a 3-0 count and came through with a single to left field.

The next batter, Drew Hilman, hit a double to give OCC's pitcher Brett Wallach an opportunity to help himself with runner on second and third base.

Wallach came through with a two RBI single.

The score is 2-3, in Saddleback's favor, through six innings. Saddleback has four hits, Coast has five hits and both teams have no errors.

First hit of the game and scoring update 1

By Tony Lee On Tuesday, March 24, 2009 0 comments
Saddleback's Tyler Krobetzky hit the game's first hit in the top of the third inning against Coast's Brett Wallach. Krobetzky to lead off the bottom of the third inning, Coast's Kevin Clark hit a ball to the left-field warning track.

It's really breezy out here. I blame the wind for that.

In the top of the fourth inning, Saddleback's Jeff Montenegro led off the inning with a walk after trailing 0-2 in the count.

However, Saddleback's Sean Parvin grounded out to a 4-6-3 double play to bail out Coast's pitcher Brett Wallach.

After Saddleback's Dalton Sype's single, Darren Coombs popped out to Coast's center fielder Mykal Stokes.

Score is still 0-0.

New features on the blog

By Tony Lee On Sunday, March 22, 2009 0 comments
I wanted to point out the new features on this blog.

First is the poll on the right side of the blog.

One of my goals with this blog is to cover one Orange Coast College sporting event live per week. But I don't want to cover something the readers of the blog don't have any particular interest in.

Please vote and yours truly (and my magical shoes) will be at the poll winner's game, meet or match.

Also, if you want something not on that list to be covered, please leave a comment or e-mail me at coastreportsports@yahoo.com.

Second is the counter right above the blog. By the end of the semester, It'd be awesome to have all the OCC students and faculty visit this blog at least once but we'll see how that goes.

Third is the love it, hate it or it's OK boxes at the end of each blog posts.

It's just like Facebook's status like it option, except with more choices.

Enjoy.
